How far is Amsterdam below sea level?
Amsterdam is 2 meters below sea level and is just like many other many places in the Netherlands that go as low as 7 meters below sea level. The lowest parts are in the western section of the country, and they include Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland and Zeeland. The city, which is surrounded by flat land, was formed by peat clay and large polders and has been often been claimed to be continuously sinking into the North Sea.

What is the meaning of “Below sea level”?

The sea level is the elevation reference to the shoreline, which refers to the point where the ocean and the land meet. The land above the elevation is higher than sea level and land below the elevation is lower than the sea level.  Amsterdam hasn’t always been below sea level, but the problem started thousands of years ago. In the twelfth century, people begun settling along river Amstel and started to build canals because of periodic floods. The construction to resist inundation, which went on for centuries, caused the city to move a bit lower than before. So, the city’s position below the sea level can be directly attributed to how it is built.
