So, you want to find the Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam? Well, strictly speaking, it has no fixed address! That’s because it moves—or should we say—floats?
The Bloemenmarkt (Amsterdam Flower Market) can be found on the Singel Canal, which is part of the concentric half-circular canal belt. Don’t confuse the Singel canal with the Singelgracht canal, which used to surround the outer limits of the old city, before Amsterdam expanded.
Since 1862, the Bloemenmarkt was served by boats on the Singel, delivering their flower crops from Aalsmeer and other locations in the flower district of Holland. The flowers were sold to shops directly from the barges. Unfortunately, the Flower Market has become too much of a good thing because of its attraction as a special tourist spot for travellers visiting the city. The Bloemenmarkt is no longer just a colourful market for beautiful flowers. Instead, it has become also a venue for “kitschy” souvenirs, which are ousting the flowers. Or at least, not letting the local population reach them without first fighting off the crowds. However Amsterdam has still plenty of other markets to visit.
The address of the Bloemenmarkt is Singel 630 to 600, 1017 AZ, which is located between the Koningsplein and the Muntplein. It is open between 9:00 and 17:30, Monday till Saturday. It opens later on Sunday, at 11:30.
