When go visiting the Keukenhof gardens

Visiting the Keukenhof

So, you want to know when to visit the Keukenhof Gardens? The answer is not that simple. We can give you a rough idea, but there are so many factors that come into play, there is no sure answer. One thing we can tell you definitely—Keukenhof is open to the public just eight weeks of the year, during March, April, and May.

What will be the next theme at the Keukenhof Gardens?

The theme of the Keukenhof Gardens changes from year to year. In 2019, the “Flower Power” of the early 1970’s took a “trip” to Keukenhof—over seven million of them. That would be seven million tulip bulbs, not flower children! However, each year, we do see 1.5 million visitors entering the park during the two months that it is open. In previous years, tourists have enjoyed a number of themes, including country themes, such as Holland, Germany, and the UK. Vincent van Gogh was credited with his own theme. It may have been in light of the fact that his first garden painting was called, “Bulb fields”. The planned theme for 2020 is “World of colours”. It is hard to imagine an improvement on the magnificent colours and layouts of all the previous themes!

If you visit the Keukenhof

The following tips may help you plan your trip to the Keukenhof Gardens in 2020.

  • The dates to visit in 2020 are 21st March – May 10th.
  • The Keukenhof Gardens are very near the town of Lisse, which offers accommodation for tourists. However, a day trip can be taken from Amsterdam or Schiphol Airport.
  • To beat the crowds, come before 10:30 AM or after 4:00 PM. Many people don’t realise that these times offer the best light for photography. (Don’t let the word get out!)
  • It is difficult to predict the best time to visit in a particular year. Depending on the weather, and perhaps, exporting activities, you may find that the tulips are not quite in full bloom in March, or that some of the fields may already be empty in May.
  • Generally speaking, whatever period you visit during the two months the Gardens are open, you should be able to view flowers. Tulips will probably be blooming for the full period. Other flowers, such as crocuses and daffodils bloom early in spring. Also, watch for the beautiful roses showing off their own striking colours.
  • While in the bulb region of the Netherlands, drive around the flower fields in the surrounding areas near the Gardens.
  • Prepare to spend the whole day if you wish to see everything! However, you can combine other attractions with your visit. For example, enjoy a half-day tour of the Gardens together with the Zaanse Schans windmills.
  • Climb to the top of a windmill in the Gardens to get an overview of the current theme. No need for a helicopter!

The theme of “Flower Power” was over in 2019, but look forward to the glorious colours of the Keukenhof Gardens coming back in their full flower power, every year, during the months of spring!
