What is Artis Amsterdam Royal Zoo like?

The Artis Zoo in Amsterdam houses 750 species of creatures, including giraffes, zebras, chimpanzees, and elephants in transplanted natural habitations. The Artis was initiated in 1838. Good-looking gardens house hundreds of tree species and endless flowers and plants that bloom every summer and spring. A holiday here is a fantastic day for old and young.

The Artis Amsterdam Zoo offers many things, including an impressive zoo, an idyllic park, a museum, an aquarium, a planetarium, a beautiful garden with splendid 19th-century architecture, and, most of all, a place where you can discover the wonders of the world and admire nature. Seven hundred fifty species of animals, 300 tree species and many varieties of plants live here.

An exciting day for young and old

Discover the many aspects of Artis: from the smallest creatures in the nearby Micropia Museum to huge exotic mammals, and from brilliant butterflies around the world to wildlife in local canals. While Artis replicates the animals’ natural habitat, visitors from the African savannah can admire sharks and coral reefs. It is always a fascinating (and informative) trip for children, but visitors of all ages find something here.

Modern zoo

Artis can be a trustworthy institution – nevertheless, it was created in 1838 – but it is not afraid to transform over time. The newest member, Micropia, is a modern museum dedicated to the wonders of microorganisms (book a special combination ticket to enjoy both sights). Many events also ensure that visitors come back to Artis. The most common are “ZOOmeravonden” (summer nights): Artis open every Saturday until sunset during the Summer. Here picnics, excursions, discussions and even concerts take place.

What to do in the area

Green and at the same time, the central plantation has much to offer. The combination of boulevards and museums with a lively culinary and cultural life means that it is just a stone’s throw away from Artis. Other major attractions in Amsterdam, such as the National Maritime Museum, the Hermitage, and the Tropen Museum, are also close. The Royal Carre Theater and Hortus Botanicus are also around the corner. You can have drinks and snacks on the vibrant Nieuwmarkt or in the many snack bars around the Linnaeusstraat.
