Are These The 10 Worst Hotels On Earth?

Most of us have stayed in a hotel that can only be described as a hellhole. Thanks to the arrival of the Internet, however, we now have the benefit of online reviews that to a large extent eliminate the guesswork when it comes to choosing your next hotel. Unless you deliberately want to stay at the worst hotel on earth*, don’t choose any of the accommodation establishments on the list below.

THE 5 WORST HOTELS ON EARTH

The Grand Hotel, Pristina

Located in downtown Pristina (on Mother Theresa Boulevard), the Grand Hotel once belonged to the Yugoslav government.

It was constructed nearly 50 years ago in 1978 and was originally a 5-star hotel and a local landmark.

Nowadays, however, this 13-story establishment has become a shadow of what it used to be. Not surprisingly, therefore, its occupancy rate is rarely above one percent.

That is according to a report recently published by the New York Times. The newspaper described the hotel as a maze of poorly lit passages with pigeon feathers all over the place. It also reported numerous cobwebs and said the dark wood doors created eerie memories of the city’s even darker past.

The New World Hotel, New York City

Although this hotel’s prices are very reasonable, it has become rather a legend among travelers for its incredibly bad feedback.

Out of nearly 400 reviews, 138 rated the New World as ‘terrible’. There were, however, two lonely souls who gave it an ‘excellent’ rating.

Situated in the Chinatown district of New York, the New World is one of the city’s cheapest accommodation options. Once in your room, however, you will have to deal with paper-thin walls, a total lack of windows, bed bugs, and really dirty shared bathrooms.

Aspinals Hotel, Singapore

As most experienced travelers will know, Singapore is known for orderliness and cleanliness. The same can sadly not always be said for its accommodation establishments, which range from luxurious 5-star hotels right down to completely disgusting hovels. At least that is the experience of large numbers of tourists.

The Aspinals Hotel specifically gets criticized for its customer support or rather the total lack of it. It shouldn’t surprise anyone, therefore, that this hotel is very close to the bottom when it comes to Tripadvisor ratings.

What makes people so unhappy about the Aspinals? It starts with rude staff and goes on to dirty towels and insects in your room and even in the passages. There are also other complaints that we would rather not mention in civilized company.

The Lonsdale Hotel, London

Although London undoubtedly has some of the best hotels in the world (think of The Savoy, The Ritz, and The Grosvenor, not all of the city’s hotels have impressed travelers. But even among these, the Lonsdale is in a category of its own.

No less than 72 percent of ratings on Tripadvisor describe this hotel as ‘terrible’. We have to mention though that a mysterious 1% of reviewers found the Lonsdale an ‘excellent’ place to stay.

The source of all this unhappiness includes the things that bother most travelers: smelly carpets, horribly dirty bathrooms, and beds that are sometimes so dirty that nobody wants to sleep on them. Except for the 1% mentioned above.

Centaur Hotel, New Delhi

The Centaur has one thing in its favor: it’s not far from Indira Gandhi International Airport. That is enough reason for it to get a steady flow of guests. In spite of that, it regularly gets some of the worst online reviews we’ve ever seen.

No less than 70% of the reviews on TripAdvisor describe it as ‘dire’ with many reviewers mentioning conditions that are borderline dangerous, including brown water and blood-stained sheets.

One reviewer said that he or she can not even start to tell people how disgustingly dirty the bathrooms were. They were also given partly-used lotions and the towels were brown with no sign that they have ever been washed. Even worse worse: The shower was terribly dirty and the water was a nasty yellowish brown.

THE 5 WORST HOTELS ON EARTH “RUNNERS UP”

The Sharm Inn Amarein, South Sinai, Egypt

Although the Sharm Inn Amarein is supposed to be a 4-star establishment, it has acquired quite a bad reputation among travelers. Some of the complaints are related to old furniture in every room and bad customer service. Apart from that, the equipment is often broken – for example, the air-conditioners might not work. The hotel’s interior was once beautiful but is now spoiled by dirt everywhere, including on the windows, tables, and chairs. Things are just not cleaned regularly. The fact that the Sharm Inn Amarein charges 4-star rates and often provides 1-star service irks the vast majority of travelers.

Hotel y Cabanas Del Lago, Puerto Varas, Chile

The biggest problem with this establishment is that everything is so old and dilapidated. Many areas have never been renovated. There are, however, a number of renovated rooms. If you have to stay here, ask for one of them. The rest of the hotel is not only dilapidated, but some parts also appear downright dangerous. Apart from that, quite a few of the staff members need urgent training in customer service.

Siva Sharm Resort and Spa, South Sinai, Egypt

When you book accommodation at the Siva Sharm Resort, you pay for a clean, well-furnished room. What you get, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Not only are some of the rooms desperately in need of repair, but reviewers often also describe staff members as unhelpful and even downright rude. Even when it comes to the quality of the food a large percentage of customers are unhappy and describe it as ‘monotonous’. Some guests also complain about stale food.

Club Aqua, Gumbet, Turkey

The biggest complaint mentioned in online reviews of this establishment is that the rooms are often dirty. Some reviewers describe bed linen that has clearly not been replaced since the previous guests left. The swimming pool of the Club Aqua is also often described as filthy. Some reviews even talk about it being filled with sewage after it has rained. On top of everything else, the staff is described as unhelpful by one after the other reviewer. And some guests also mention that the staff themselves seemed to be rather dirty.

*Hans Brinker Budget Hotel, Amsterdam, Holland

Some daredevils would of course travel long distances just to be able to say that they have stayed at the worst hotel on earth. Our last hotel is exactly that – in its own “marketing” words.

The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel launched itself with an advertising campaign nearly 30 years ago in which it described itself as “The Worst Hotel in the World”. The humoristic ads proclaimed how unfriendly, dirty, and uncomfortable this establishment is. The owners even boasted about the hotel’s broken beds, dirty walls, and bad service. Ever since then, it has had to deal with a steady stream of adventurers who can’t wait to stay here for at least one night. In reality the hotel scores a 7,8 out of 10 based on more than 7000 reviews.
